Welcome to the wizarding world of Harry Potter Cocktails.
In this series of Movie Inspired Drinks, I’ll be sharing 5 Harry Potter themed cocktails and drinks that you can make at home. Whether its time for your annual Harry Potter movie marathon, or you’re throwing a wizard inspired party. These are the recipes for you. This one specifically, is the Ravenclaw cocktail.
What is Ravenclaw in Harry Potter
So perhaps you’ve taken some Harry Potter sorting hat house quiz to see what house you’re in and want to make a cocktail to celebrate. You got Ravenclaw? Congratulations… on being a nerd!
Anyway… Sorry about that.
Or perhaps you’ve been living under a rock for the last 25 or so years and have no idea what Harry Potter is. Either way, you might be curious to know more about Ravenclaw. So let’s just cover that.
Ravenclaw was one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Its founder was the medieval witch Rowena Ravenclaw. Members of this house were characterised by their wit, learning, and wisdom. The emblematic animal symbol was an eagle, and blue and bronze were its colours.
And that’s directly from the Harry Potter Fandom so you know its right.
What are the characteristics of Ravenclaw in Harry Potter?
Ravenclaw values learning, wisdom, wit, and intellect. This is the house people usually consider as having the smartest students. Students are academically motivated and creative thinkers. Ravenclaws can be eccentric and curious, always seeking to learn more. They are logical and rational, but also think outside the box.
Ingredients for the Ravenclaw Cocktail
The drink, as with all the other Harry Potter house cocktails, have to have a certain aspect. The correct color. Which for Ravenclaw, is green.
With Ravenclaws also being consider to be more, I guess, elegant. We also want to keep this cocktail classy. But still bright blue! So we’re keep the recipe more hard hitting and classic, similar to a pre prohibition cocktail that’s full of history and class. A twist on classic Martini.
#1 Gin
Gin will make the base of this cocktail. Any gin will be fine but keep in mind this is a booze forward drink, so make sure it’s a gin you like the flavor of as you’ll be tasting it from the first sip.
#2 Dry Vermouth
Second ingredient is dry vermouth which turns this glass of gin into a gin martini.
#3 Blue Curacao
In order to make it bright blue and create a layer of orange flavoing, we’re going to go in with the 90s classic that is Blue Curacao.
For the Serve
That about covers the ingredients for this Harry Potter inspired Slytherin cocktail, but let’s cover some other basics to get you started:
Cocktail Mixer Set
You’re going to need a cocktail mixing glass as this is a stirred cocktail. You could get away with stirring in a jug with a long spoon or fork, but I always recommend picking up the proper set. It’ll come in handy for all your future cocktails and hey, if you like this cocktail, there’s plenty of other stirred drinks you’ll like.
Tips and Tricks
Garnishing
I like to leave this cocktail ungarnished as it gives it more of a classy look. But orange is a color that would pop on this cocktail, and orange is the flavor of the cocktail. So if you really want to make a splash, try garnishing it with an orange peel twist.
