The Little Mermaid Movie
“The Little Mermaid” is the beloved story of Ariel, a beautiful and spirited young mermaid with a thirst for adventure. The youngest of King Triton’s daughters, and the most defiant, Ariel longs to find out more about the world beyond the sea, and while visiting the surface, falls for the dashing Prince Eric. While mermaids are forbidden to interact with humans, Ariel must follow her heart. She makes a deal with the evil sea witch, Ursula, which gives her a chance to experience life on land, but ultimately places her life – and her father’s crown – in jeopardy.
That’s the official description of The Little Mermaid taken right from the horses mouth - Disney.
But you already knew that, right? It’d be hard not to know, especially with the new Little Mermaid live action remake out on May 26th.
Given all the buzz that’s been surrounding this release, I thought I’d jump to the opportunity to create a cocktail inspired by the film. Because let’s face it, The Little Mermaid is a film for grown ups.
Hear me out. The first animated Little Mermaid came out 1989. It’s us adults who grew up with it, it’s us who will be feeling the nostalgia. So we need something for us grown ups to go along with the movie. And what do we all like? Cocktails.
Well, I’d hope you like cocktails considering you’re on this drinks website.
Point being, I didn’t have to be asked twice to create this Little Mermaid cocktail.
Disney Themed Cocktails
A testament to that is the fact that this isn’t my first Disney cocktail. It’s part of a slow release I’m doing on Disney themed drinks.
The first one was my remaking of the infamous Baby Yoda cocktail.
The second one was my take on Cruella De Vil in homage to the Emma Stone remake that came out in 2021.
And now, 2 years later. I’m back again, this time. With The Little Mermaid.
The Cocktail
Since I used Vodka for the Baby Yoda cocktail, and Rum for the Cruella De Vil cocktail, I figured out branch out again and this time, I went with Tequila.
Now there are plenty oceanic cocktails out there. Some fancy, difficult to make at home, elegant. Some quirky, goofy, and simplistic. I strived for the middle with this one.
Even though it’s a Disney themed cocktail I still wanted it to be easy to recreate for anyone who should so want to do so.
Easy to make at home
That’s why I kept it similar to the Margarita, as a Margarita is already an easy cocktail to create at home. I just changed a few ingredients, cupboard essentials really. Other then Blue Curacao but you can get that pretty much anywhere, it’s 14 quid on amazon or just pop into any supermarket.
The Blue Curacao is essential because it gives the cocktail that oceanic blue look whilst still tasting like a Margarita.
That being said if you really want to use Cointreau or triple sec and retain the true Margarita recipe, you could do so and just add a dash of blue food colouring.
Where we really get quirky is with that ocean themed cocktail garnish.
The Garnish
When it comes to unique cocktail garnishes, weird cocktail garnishes, or unusual cocktail garnishes. I think this one takes the cake.
If that garnish doesn’t scream ‘Little Mermaid’ then I don’t know what does. So let me explain how we go about making it. The first thing you need is the shell from a mussel. But you could just as easily use a sea shell if you preferred.
This goes without saying but do make sure it’s cleaned within an inch of it’s life. You don’t want to be making yourself sick. Clean it, boil it, clean it again.
Then inside that shell is filled with edible fruit caviar. The pearls of the sea. For that, we’re going to use fruit juiced filled boba tea popping balls. They’re so fun to use and hey, if you get a pack you can use them to make homemade boba tea, or just have fun popping them in your mouth when you’re bored. Whatever floats your boat (mind the pun)
Blended Cocktails
Another thing we must mention is that this is a blended cocktail.
Blended cocktails are great in summer, but you need to make sure you have a good blender. The last thing you want to do is be having a ‘blended cocktail’ with large chunks of unblended ice in the bottom.
I’ve previously covered this topic in depth with my top recommendations of cocktail, smoothie, and drink blenders to fit any budget which you can read here.
How to make Frozen Margaritas
Now if you’re asking yourself how to make a frozen margarita. The recipe below is exactly that. But if you want it more classic, just follow my original Margarita recipe but blend it instead of shaking with a whole cup of ice.

The cocktail itself is a simple twist on a Margarita. So if you know all about Margaritas, this will come as a breeze. or should I say it'll come as a sea breeze?
