Harry Potter Hufflepuff Cocktail Recipe
Welcome to the wizarding world of Harry Potter Cocktails.
In this series of Movie Inspired Drinks, I’ll be sharing 5 Harry Potter themed cocktails and drinks that you can make at home. Whether its time for your annual Harry Potter movie marathon, or you’re throwing a wizard inspired party. These are the recipes for you. For this drink, we’re going to make a Hufflepuff inspired Cocktail.
What is Hufflepuff in Harry Potter
So perhaps you’ve taken some Harry Potter sorting hat house quiz to see what house you’re in and want to make a cocktail to celebrate. You got Hufflepuff? The one nobody wants. Don’t worry, remember, Newt Scamander was a hufflepuff so it isn’t all that bad…
Or perhaps you’ve been living under a rock for the last 25 or so years and have no idea what Harry Potter is. Either way, you might be curious to know more about Hufflepuff. So let’s just cover that.
Hufflepuff was one of the four Houses of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Its founder was the medieval witch Helga Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff was the most inclusive among the four houses, valuing hard work, dedication, patience, loyalty, and fair play rather than a particular aptitude in its members.
And that’s directly from the Harry Potter Fandom so you know its right.
What are the characteristics of Hufflepuff in Harry Potter?
Hufflepuff characteristics include a strong sense of justice, loyalty, patience, and a propensity for hard work. Hufflepuffs are also seen as “nice”. They’re the happy go lucky, some what forgettable house.
Truth be told I’d like to think I was a Gryffindor, as would most of us. But given my time in school, I’d most likely be a hufflepuff. They try and stay out of trouble, hang back, play with there animals and just get on with it. And I like that.
Ingredients for the Hufflepuff Cocktail
The drink, as with all the other Harry Potter house cocktails, have to have a certain aspect. The correct color. Which for Hufflepuff, is yellow.
When I think Hufflepuff I think about prancing around in the garden, bees buzzing and botanicals. No better cocktail represents that then the classic Bees Knees. So for this cocktail, we’re going to take the classic bees knees and give it a twist with some limoncello.
#1 Gin
Any gin would be fine but a classic London dry would work the best. Something really botanical, dry, and juniper forward. Any London dry gin will fit that brief.
#2 Lemon Juice
Citrus will give this cocktail a fresh feel and lemon will work the best for giving it that “garden fresh” feeling.
#3 Honey Syrup
To balance that citrus and gin, we need some sweetness, and honey works perfect for that. Honey also has a strong animal and yellow association which pairs nicely with Hufflepuff so it works perfectly.
To make honey syrup, simply mix a dash of boiling water in with your honey and stir till the honey loosens. This makes the honey easier to pour, and even more importantly, when we shake our cocktail it’ll make the honey easier to combine with the other less dense ingredients.
#4 Limoncello
So far this is exactly the same ingredients as a Bees Knees. So to make this original we will add some limoncello to add to that sweet and sour vibe of the cocktail.
For the Serve
That about covers the ingredients for this Harry Potter inspired Hufflepuff cocktail, but let’s cover some other basics to get you started:
Cocktail Shaker Set
You’re going to need a cocktail shaker as this is a shaken cocktail. If you don’t already own a cocktail shaker, I’d recommend picking up a Boston shaker, which is a tin on tin styled shaker. That being said read this article about the 4 different styles of cocktail shakers so you can better decide which shaker will suit you.
And if this is your first shaker, get a set so you have everything you need and can upgrade each piece to suit yourself.
If you’re not ready to make the plunge into buying a cocktail shaker, then use a jar with a tight fitting lid, or any similar container with a tight fitting lid that you can fill with ice and liquid and shake without it coming loose.
Tips and Tricks
Garnishing
For garnishing this drink you can go one of 2 ways, either fresh and light. Ingredients like mint, lemon peels and gypsophila work great for that. Or you can go with the fun side of Hufflepuff like I did and garnish it with a twist of rainbow fizzy sweets. I also used the same garnish for my Wonka inspired fizzy lifting cocktail which you can find here.
Make it Sparkling
You could also make this drink sparkling if you prefer something fizzy. To do this, simply serve it in a taller glass and top it with soda water. It’ll be like a honey flavored lemonade.
