Variations
Low ABV Variation
For a low abv variation swap the Lyre's Non-Alcoholic Orange sec with Cointreau.
Alcoholic Variation
For a full alcoholic version feel free to use a good 100% agave reposado tequila and good triple sec.
Make it sparkling
For a sparkling version, serve the same recipe in a tall glass filled with cubed ice and top with soda, this recipe also works amazing with grapefruit soda, somewhat of a bell pepper and non-alcoholic twist on a Paloma.
Lyre’s Agave Reserva Spirit
Lyre’s agave reserva spirit is a non-alcoholic tequila styled beverage from the lovely people at Lyre’s. This is one of two in there tequila styled range, this one in particular ‘Lyre’s Agave Reserva’ is most similar to a reposado tequila.
Their other variation is Lyre’s Agave Blanco which is much more similar to a Blanco tequila. Both of which you can shop below.
I’ve also done a full review and first tasting of both these which you can find here on Youtube or right here on Smartblend.
Bell Pepper Cordial
For this recipe you will need to make a super simple bell pepper cordial, the good news is firstly, super easy to make, secondly, once you have it you can use it for a number of cocktails.
A good use is to simply mix it with soda water for a bell pepper soda, which although sounds like it wouldn’t be nice, really actually is quite delicious.
Something about the sweetness with bell peppers just works great, maybe it’s that savoury, umami flavour balancing with sweetness that makes it so nice, all I know is that it sure is tasty, trust me, try it.

Ingredients
25ml Bell Pepper Cordial
For the Bell Pepper cordial
200g White sugar
200ml Water
2 mini bell peppers
2 teaspoons Citric acid or 100ml lime juice
Method
For the bell pepper cordial
Combine the sugar and water in a sauce pan on medium/high heat, stir whilst heating till all the sugar has dissolved.
Once all the sugar has dissolved, bring to a boil, chop and deseed your mini bell peppers (saving the top for garnishing) dump them in the sugar syrup and simmer for 10 minutes.
After 10 minutes take of the heat and stir in your citric acid or lime juice. At this point you can also stir in a pinch of salt to really bring those flavours out the cordial, a pinch wont make it taste salty, don't worry, it'll just enhance the bell pepper flavour. Strain and store in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
Top tip: Use red, yellow or orange bell peppers but don't use green, the green ones are unripe, super delicious but don't balance as well as a sweetener in this recipe.
For the cocktail
Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker with plenty of cubed ice.
Shake well and strain over a large ice cube, top tip, store your ice cubes in the glass you intend to serve and put the whole thing in the freezer, take it out when you're ready to strain.
Garnish your alcohol free bell pepper margarita with the cap of a mini bell pepper and enjoy.
