A Strictly Come Dancing cocktail so shimmery it’ll make Craig Revel Horwood salivate.

With Strictly Come Dancing being shown on Saturday nights, you might think that you’d have to choose between a night out and streaming the nations glitteriest dancing show. I’m here to tell you that that’s just not the case. At least not anymore

With this cocktail recipe inspired by the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. You can finally spend your Strictly Saturdays in style.

Did I mention that it actually shimmers?! That’s right. Not only is this cocktail super easy to re-create with easy to get ingredients. No expert knowledge needed here. It also shimmers.

Just look at that magic shimmer. That’s what we call, as Craig Revel Horwood would say, A-ma-zing!

The Glitterball

So lets talk about the name of this cocktail. For those of you who are partial to a cocktail or two. You may already be familiar with the name “Highball” Don’t worry if not, for in full Smartblend fashion, here’s a 2 sentence sum up…

A highball is both a style of cocktail and a type of glass. Any drink which is made up primarily of a spirit base and sparkling or soda top can be refereed to as a highball (gin and tonic, scotch and soda, whisky coke. etc.) and any glass which is taller then it is wide, such as a Collins glass, is and can be referred as a highball glass.

As for this here cocktail. This is at the base, a Gin and Tonic. Served in a highball. That’s a highball served in a highball… A Highball Highball if you will.

However, I couldn’t exactly call this the “Strictly Highball” I mean sure, it has a ring to it. But this is Strictly Come Dancing for crying out loud! It needs more sparkle then that. Enter - “The Glitterball”

Which ironically works on many levels. Not only does it sum up strictly perfectly, I mean the whole aim is to win the glitterball trophy after all. Its also a play on words with the style of cocktail. So you see, it had to be called the glitterball. And as the Strictly Come Dancing ultimate cocktail recipe (according to myself), it had to be named after the Strictly Come dancing ultimate icon. Sorry Shirley Ballas, we’re still talking about the glitterball.

A note on edible glitter

Edible glitter stirred cocktail gif

The thing about edible glitter is that its really fun and really cheap! You can stir it in just about any drink to make it look pretty. Alcoholic or not. Remember, you only need a tiny amount so even a 10g pot will last you ages. However, there are a few things to remember.

Firstly, whatever colour you get will interact with the liquid. The beauty of the glitter ball is that because the base is a gin and tonic, its completely clear. So whatever colour glitter I add will turn the cocktail that colour. Use clear liquid or complimentary colour like green and gold to get the best results.

Secondly, when you stop stirring, the sparkles will slowly come to a halt. Don’t worry, just serve it with a straw and stir every time you want to see some glitter magic.

Lastly, and this is by far the most important. Make sure you buy EDIBLE glitter. I can not stress this enough, don’t go drinking non edible glitter. That ain’t going to do you any good. To get the magic shimmer effect you need to get edible glitter.

More to the point, you need specific glitter. Edible glitter that is to thick will not make the shimmer effect like in the above cocktail gif. If you want that effect you need the right glitter. The type I use is this one from Amazon UK. Don’t come at me if you buy some random glitter and it does not work. Make sure you pick up the right type. I tried and tested a few similar products with no success till I got that one.

With that being said. Enjoy the rest of Strictly Come Dancing, enjoy your sparkly cocktails, don’t forget to drink responsibly and share with me your sparkly creations. Most importantly remember to…

Keeeeeeeep Drinking
