Dimplex Dehumidifier In Situ - Amazon UK

Like most people, I do the vast majority of my shopping on Amazon, What can I say, its easy. However, its not always the most reliable. Take dehumidifiers for example. The most popular dehumidifier on Amazon UK is the Pro Breeze. Now the pro breeze looks the part, it also has the ‘quiet mark’ ensuring that its not to loud and has over 2.4 thousand reviews. Seem legit to me…

However, it’s £150, which is not bad at all for a 12 litre dehumidifier, in-fact that’s a really good price, but the Dimplex 20L is about 100 quid more and you get extra power, extra 8 litres of the water tank and all for pretty much the same size.

So why is it that the Dimplex has 89 reviews when the Pro Breeze has over 2.4 thousand. Is the Pro breeze really that good? Maybe not, Pro Breeze may well of put a lot of emphasis on gathering reviews, we’re much likely to buy something with 2.4 thousand reviews at 8 out of 10 stars rather then 13 reviews at 10 out of 10 stars, so just the fact Pro Breeze has more reviews breeds, well, more reviews.

Second to that, Pro breeze is a sponsored listing, so they pay to show up first on Amazon and if that wasn’t enough, they are available on amazon prime, unlike the Dimplex that may take 5 working days to get to you.

When you think about it, that’s nothing, but when you put all those things together; the blue ‘Prime’ mark, the showing up first, the high collection of reviews. It’s Amazon marketing 101, it makes us think its better.

That being said and I’m sure by the name of this review you can assume rightly that I decided to buy the Dimplex 20L, review quantity aside, it just seemed like the better value for money and comes with a 3 year warranty so it’s not like its a big risky buy. I could just send it back if it’s no good. And as first hand reviews do mean a great deal (god knows I rely on them for buying anything over £50) I figured I’d write this exact review and share my experience with the Dimplex dehumidifier.

What is the Dimplex 20l Dehumidifier?

Technically speaking, this isn’t just the ‘Dimplex 20L Dehumidifier’ this is the ‘Dimplex 20L EverDri dehumidifier with electronic humidistat, humidity comfort light and timer’ but that’s a mouth-full.

Basically, its a machine to help bring down moisture levels in your home. Perfect when there’s a lot of water around (bathrooms) and for old houses that might not be as well suited for keeping the outside elements outside, not to forget the best friend of high humidity, basements.

Why would you need a dehumidifier?

High humidity over 60% can encourage mould and mildew, damage furniture, wallpaper, paintwork, floors, and brickwork. High humidity also gives an awful musty smell to homes and its going to start damaging both your home and your health. Breathing in possible mould is not healthy as I’m sure you know. So dehumidifiers are great for keeping that moisture level down, your home smelling fresh, looking fresh and you lungs mould free. result.

They’re especially good for the current climate, the last thing you want is to be quarantining with a bad cough, struggling to breath and all the while 24 hours of breathing in bad air quality. The easiest thing to do to look out for the future of your health and home is to simply buy a dehumidifier. £150 is nothing compared to the price of a damaged home due to high moisture levels.

I purchased mine for a few reasons, firstly I live in England so its raining all the time, I also have asthma so I’m more conscience of fluctuating humidity levels, I live in an old house so its not great for keeping dry and I also have a basement which is untanked so its highly susceptible to moisture and mould.

If you have a basement and it constantly smells musty, that’s a key point to why you need a dehumidifier in there, also tanking a basement may well cost 10k so I wasn’t about to do that without trying a £250 dehumidifier first.

How does the Dimplex 20l Dehumidifier work?

The thing I love about the Dimplex is that its supper simple to use. Once you receive it you need to wait 24 hours before turning it on so it can settle, then its just a case of plugging it in and clicking whether or not you want a certain level of humidity in any given room or if you want it to run continuously.

After that, all you really need to do is empty the 14 litre tank every so often and your air is clean.

Features on the Dimplex 20l Dehumidifier

Humidistat

this dehumidifier has 3 buttons on it. One to turn it of and on, one is a timer which we will get to, the other is the humidistat, which measures the amount of moisture in the air. Just because moisture in the air is bad, doesn’t mean that the drier the air is the better. Its about having the perfect level of humidity, which according to google is around 30-50% for comfort and health.

The humidistat allows you to set the Dimplex dehumidifier to the level of humidity you want, then it will constantly measure those levels and automatically cut off once you reach that level, then re-start when it goes above that level. I have main set to 40%.

Timer

The timer works in handy if you don’t want to continuedly run your dehumidifier. Often I’ll just set mine for 2 hours if I’ve recently had a steamy shower or its been pouring down with rain.

Comfort light

The comfort light is a feature on the Dimplex dehumidifier EverDri14EL model which is located on the front. It switches between 3 different colours to show the comfort level of humidity. A red glow means the air is to dry, blue means its to moist and green means its just right.

This isn’t the best designed feature. Often when you first turn the dehumidifier on its red right out the gate, which would suggest the air is fine, even if you know its not. I don’t hold any value in the light colours because they just seem inconsistent. It would probably work better if you had it on continuously and not if you turn it off when its not in use and on when you need it like I do. But i’d much rather just ignore the light and do it my own way.

Wheels

This seems like a pretty boring feature but it is so helpful, the Dimplex is on wheels so when its not in use you can have it pushed against the wall and when it comes to using it you can easily wheel it out to the middle of the room for optimal dehumidifying. Little detail, but ever so useful.

Oh and that’s not to say its heavy, its a pretty small easily carriable machine, I’m just lazy so wheels is a big plus.

Quiet Mark

The quiet mark is a third party accreditation that this model is one of the quietest on the market. If you’ve ever bought a dehumidifier before, you will know that some of them can be extremely noisy. Terrible if you want it in say, a bedroom, but this model is quiet. To which I can personal confirm.

It’s not deadly silent, but the noise isn’t by any means annoying. It’s almost like white noise, if anything it helps with sleeping.

Is the Dimplex dehumidifier worth the money?

Yes, like I said, I bought it for a very musty, very much untanked basement and after about 3 uses I already notably felt and seen differences. For one the mould was gone and secondly the basement door, which previously was to warped to shut finally stayed shut and stopped creaking.

I now have purchased a second dehumidifier so I could move the Dimplex upstairs where it works perfectly.

Is the Dimplex dehumidifier expensive to run

Not that I’ve noticed. Granted, I use it around once a week for about 4 hours. So its not getting excessive use, but with that I’ve not noticed any changes to my electricity bill, however huge changes to the air.

Does it have a drainage pipe?

Yes it does, the EverDri model which I have comes with a drainage pipe included so you can continuously run the dehumidifier without the need of the emptying the tank. It’s not something I use because like I said, I do move the dehumidifier around and I find it somewhat satisfying to see how much water it’s collected.

What if I forget that its turned on?

Not a worry, even on continuous mode it will still cut off once the tank is full.

Dimplex Dehumidifier Alternatives

So if after my review, you’ve decided you want a dehumidifier but maybe the Dimplex isn’t for you, what other options are there? There is the Pro Breeze which I mentioned in the intro as being amazon UK’s most reviewed dehumidifier. I’ve never used it but it does receive great reviews. Pro Breeze also have a 1.5 litre version which is super cheap but wont work in a big room. Perfect for small offices spaces though. On the other side of that scale you have the Hogarlabs 22l Large dehumidifier for large rooms.

Final Thoughts

If you have a musty smell in your home, damp floors or walls, the walls are starting to get discolouration, you’re coughing more, your doors are creaking, blistering paint or wall paper peeling, condensation on your windows or mirrors… well then you probably need a dehumidifier.

Its best to buy one before you develop mould in your home or bad health. It doesn’t have to be the Dimplex, just get one, any one.

Final thoughts on the Dimplex; after seeing a few and owning a few dehumidifiers in the same house, the Dimplex defiantly performs the best. It’s also worth noting that my basement area is quite large, google recommended either getting 2 dehumidifiers or an expensive one, but honestly, the Dimplex worked great on its own. That being said, I’d highly recommend this brand, more so, the Dimplex EverDri 20L model.
