Aloe Vera Cocktail
A functional twist on the classic margarita cocktail with the addition of aloe vera juice, perfect for Cinco de Mayo at home. This, is the Aloe Vera Cocktail
Cinco de Mayo is upon us 5th of May. Meaning the good people of Mexico will be commemorating the Mexican Army's victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862. For everyone else, it means having an excuse to drink Tequila and Tequila cocktails.
And the most popular Tequila cocktail? None-other than the Margarita. If you want to find out more about the classic margarita cocktail, including the history, recipe and how it got its name, then check out my article here for that.
However, being the mindful mixologist and all, today I’m bringing you a delicious and functional twist on the classic Margarita recipe. Something you can easily recreate at home this Cinco de Mayo. (or whenever you want).
The functionality of Aloe Vera
The twist on this Margarita is with the addition of aloe vera juice. Not only does this lengthen and soften the flavours of your margarita, it also adds a silky texture and adds a functionality, beneficial twist.
You see, the main issue with Cinco de Mayo home celebrations is the dreaded hangover caused by the dehydration of over indulging in booze. Aloe vera however, is naturally hydrating. Aloe vera is extremely water-dense, this helps your body detox by providing a way for you to purge and flush out impurities.
The juice also packs a number of nutrients that optimize your body’s organ output. Creating that balance of the extreme hydration of aloe with a somewhat dehydrating cocktail which creates harmony in the glass.
As an added extra, aloe is also great for skin care, digestion and liver detoxification. Considering all those benefits and the fact that it pairs beautifully with agave, why wouldn't we put the two together!?
The Surprising Health Benefits Of Tequila
Now this might seem like quite the contradiction, creating a tequila based cocktail with a focus on functionality. Given that Tequila is synonymous with partying and hangovers. However, there are actually quite a number of surprising health benefits to tequila.
Tequila is made from agave - one of the most healthy and natural sweeteners in the world. If you drink pure 100% blue weber agave Tequila, that being not mixed with low quality sugar. You’re essentially drinking one of the most healthy spirit choices you can have.

Notes
A note on purchasing the right Aloe Vera Juice
As a side note on which aloe vera to use in this cocktail. There’s a lot of “Aloe vera flavoured” and “aloe based drinks” out there which use small quantities of aloe vera. Not enough to reap the benefits nor enough to give the cocktail that silky texture and fresh flavour.
For those UK based I recommend this brand from Amazon UK which is the same as this one for the US based.
