#1 The original album was Taylor’s first completely self-written album.
And this still rings true for Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) which is being released 13 years after the original. The album was written when Taylor was between the ages of 18-20. Much of the album was written in a diary given to Taylor by Kate Walsh (Addison Montgomery in Grey’s Anatomy), Taylor is known to be a big Grey’s Anatomy fan, even naming her cat after the lead character Meredith Grey.
FUN FACT: Her other cat Benson is the 3rd wealthiest pet in the world with a net worth of a whopping $97 million.
#2 Taylor has said that each song on the album is a letter to a specific person
and largely the words she wished she’d have said to them.
Not so honourable mention to John Mayor, YUCK!
#3 Hidden lyric booklet facts
Taylor always used to hide messages the album booklet lyrics; Speak Now was no exception (we’re all excited to see if she does this again with Speak Now Taylor’s Version).
Song 1: Mine = Toby
Song 2: Sparks Fly = Portland, Oregon

#4 Taylor Swift vs Kanye
Speak Now came out after the whole Kanye & Taylor Swift drama at the VMAs and the incident is referenced in the album. The first reference is in Back to December where Swift writes “How you held me in your arms that September night the first time you ever saw me cry” written about her relationship (confirmed) with Taylor Lautner who, in a strange turn of events actually presented her with the award that night.
The main being the whole song “Innocent” which is written about/to Kayne, the biggest sign is the lyric “32 and still growing up now”, Kanye was 32 at the time & Taylor was just 19.
FUN FACT: Taylor recorded Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) when she was 32!
Taylor has said that she felt it important to write a song TO him rather than ABOUT him (at the time anyway, we’ll get onto the Reputation album one day!).
Largely the song is an expression of sympathy to Kanye after the public outrage he received which she felt she knew All Too Well!
#5 “Sparks Fly” was originally written long before the majority of Speak Now
in fact, it was written BEFORE she released her debut album in 2006. Swift rewrote elements of the song and recorded it for Speak Now after she received fan requests to release it.
#6 “Enchanted” was written about Adam Young (the secret message was Adam)
Adam, the lead singer of Owl City (remember them?). Anyway, Taylor went to an Owl City show in New York and was immediately infatuated by Adam, when she got home he had emailed her apologizing for being quite and said it was because he was “wonderstruck” to meet her so, she decided to write that word (also the name of her perfume) into the song so he knew it was about him.
He understood the message and released a slightly cringe letter to Taylor and his very own version of Enchanted “I was enchanted to meet you too” on Valentines Day, she never responded.
#7 “Better Than Revenge” is one of the more controversial songs from Speak Now
with the lyrics being quite unkind to another girl “She’s better known for the things that she does on the mattress”. It’s about Joe Jonas and him developing feelings for actress Camilla Belle while filming a music video together, he was dating Swift at the time. Jonas is said to have written “Much Better” after his & Taylor’s break up, the song pretty much says his new girlfriend is much better than her.
Taylor responds in this song by saying “there is nothing I do better than revenge”. Taylor has since said that she doesn’t agree with the message anymore, explaining that she wrote it when she was 18. We’re all interested to see whether the mattress lyric is included in Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) or not!
#8 “Last Kiss” another song about Joe Jonas
As the title suggests, their last kiss. A fun fact about the song is that the intro is exactly 27 seconds long which is how long the phone call between them was when he broke up with her. She also referenced this song in her Instagram caption for the announcement of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) when she said “just in time for July 9th , iykyk” as she references July 9th in the song.
#9 “Long Live” was written for Taylor’s band
The CD artwork was actually her & her bands arms each with an initial of Speak Now on, she has since said that this song will always remind her of her fans. It’s also up there with one of the most fave Taylor Swift songs in my house.
#10 Taylor announced that the was releasing Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) live on stage
In Nashville on 5 th May 2023 (05/05), Interestingly, Taylor announced Speak Now in July 2010 via live stream on Ustream in her Nashville apartment (the same appartement referenced in “Never Grown Up”). The release date of Speak Now (Taylor’s Version) is 7th July 2023 (07/07).
FUN FACT: Dear reader, this is also my Birthday.
There’s a lot of speculation of the dates, but, I just enjoy that they’re the same if you write the date in English or American to be honest!
