How To Make the Mint Julep
How to make the Kentucky Derby Official cocktail - The Mint Julep
Once a year the Kentucky Derby horse race takes place, and although the emphasis is on the race, there is a drink on the side-lines fuelling the Kentucky Derby vibe.
That drink is the Mint Julep. Over the course of two days at Churchill Downs, its estimated that more than 120,000 Mint Juleps are served.
Although Buffalo Trace have the monopoly on this drink, it hasn’t always been the way, in fact the mint julep didn’t originally call for bourbon, it didn’t even have mint.
That’s right, this Kentucky Derby signature serve had a whole life prior to the Kentucky Derby.
The earliest accounts call for just Rum, water and sugar. It was later in the early 1800s that Americans would serve the julep with French Brandy, usually cognac, and by the mid 1800s with a tax increase and slowing in brandy production, the spirit of choice was changed to bourbon, becoming the Mint Julep we know today.
